Living a Purposeful Life, Not Defined by Position

I am a woman who derives my drive from purpose rather than position. For over two decades, I have served as a decision-maker in politics and government, often being the youngest, only female and person of colour at the table. It has not been an easy journey, but my unwavering desire to make a meaningful impact has kept me going. I am not motivated by titles, accolades, or roles; I am driven by my commitment to effecting positive change in my community and the world.

My experience as a black woman in politics has been marked by challenges stemming from the intersectionality of race and gender. I have faced scepticism and questioned my place at the table. However, like Congresswoman Maxine Waters, I am determined to reclaim my time and make a difference every day for my daughter's and future generations' betterment.

After serving and advising great leaders such as President Obama, former Mayors Michael Bloomberg, and Cory Booker, I now lead my team at DPBell & Associates. We work with individuals and brands dedicated to making a difference in society.

Balancing my family life and professional pursuits is an acrobatic feat that requires constant juggling. I do not subscribe to the notion of work-life balance, which suggests a 50/50 split between work and personal life. Instead, I believe in work-life integration, which enables me to define my own rules and achieve my goals while being present for my family. It is essential to rewrite the rules for women in politics and provide them the flexibility to create their path while making a difference.

My work has allowed my daughter to meet influential figures in politics and government. She has learned to use her voice to make an impact, speak truth to power, and effect change in her world. It is essential to empower young women of color, especially black women, to realize their potential and understand that they have the power to effect change despite the obstacles they may face.

In conclusion, I want all women to know that they are forces to be reckoned with, and no one can take away their power. We must strive to live a purposeful life defined by our commitment to effecting positive change in our communities and the world.
